NEWS FLASH - SOPHIE PROGRESS REPORT FOR 12/26/08

Hey Hounders, Ms. Sophie here with an update. As you may remember from my previous posting, I have a little bit of a weight problem. Last June, before I was a Bumpass Hound, I weighed 147 pounds and my vet deemed that I was not fat but that I was "obese." In October, when I became a Bumpass Hound, I weighed 132 pounds. My foster dad and mom decided to put me on a low fat diet dog kibble and to restrict my calorie intake volume. After 2 weeks they took me to the Bumpass Hound vet at the end of October and I weighed 128 pounds. I didn't like the brand of low fat food I was being given so my foster parents changed me to a different brand and I like it a lot better even though it has an even lower fat content than what I was getting. They also bought me special very low fat treats so I could get mine when everyone else around here gets theirs. After 2 weeks I was taken back to the vet and I weighed in at 124 pounds in mid November. Two weeks after that I weighed 122 pounds. My guardians didn't change anything and when Shelby Belle had to go to the vet a couple of weeks before Christmas, I went along and I weighed in at just a little under 120 pounds. Well today my foster dad took me for a ride while he did some errands and since we were in the area we stopped at the vets to see if I could get weighed. Now it has been the holiday season and food has been rather plentiful around the house so dad was somewhat concerned. Was he ever excited when I came back from the scales and the vet tech told dad that I weighed 117 pound. Dad called mom right away to tell her the good news. We are aiming for 110 pounds by Valentines Day. I really feel good about myself. Again, I want to thank my foster brothers Homer J. and Jack for stealing food from my dish and my treats and cookies when I'm not looking (or am I?). Thanks to all you Hounders that send me encouragements and stories about some of the weight problems y'all have had. It's good not to feel alone in my Battle of the Bulge.
Happy New Year to y'all.
- Sophie

It is wonderful that you have new homes. so many people just feed us, and without exercise we can gain weight. A new home with an active life can do wonders. Say thanks to the gang, playing with them probably is a big reason you can brag about your weight loss.

My name is also Sophie. I have also lost weight eating low fat. My mom gives me carrots, broccoli, and apples for snacks. She says that has helped to make me think I am getting to eat more. She also says I don't beg as much.

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
