BZ (BRAVO-ZULU)

Heya Hounders, Once again, it's the newest Bumpass Hound, Sophie (a.k.a. Sofa-dof) here with an important announcement and award. As you probably know, our BBBs (best blog buddies) Mogley and Bella are very involved with Golden Retriever rescue out in snowy Colorado. As a rescued Golden Retriever myself, I realize how important that rescue and fostering efforts are in helping dogs that would otherwise be homeless and/or in a shelter. We are all looking for the same thing people want, to be a loved family member in a forever home. Us Bumpasses have met many wonderful cats and dogs through Dogs With Blogs. We were introduced to DWB by our friend Spencer who is at The Rainbow Bridge. He helped rescue Golden Retrievers in Southern California. We do what we can here in Virginia and Mogley and Bella are helping out in the Rocky Mountain states. Well Spencer's mom (HM) "M" and dad (HD) "S" took a short hiatus after Spencer's passing. Turns out it was a very short break, and now they are back in action rescuing and fostering Golden Retrievers that would otherwise be homeless. They have kept Spencer's blog site open as a tribute to him but they now have opened Dog By Nature and are back at it; rescuing and fostering Golden Retrievers, and doing whatever else they can to assist in the rescue effort for Goldens. We remember the heart breaking story of the twin Golden pups Ben and Jerry and all the HM and HD did to try to save them. That episode was a low. As a high, they have just fostered a Golden who emigrated from Taiwan, Candy. Candy went to her new furever home this past weekend. HM and HD, along with our BBB Spencer, get others involved; they got us involved. Us Bumpasses were inspired the efforts of Mogley and Bella, and Spencer and HM and HD. We created our own special award to recognize the above and beyond efforts of blogs like Mogley's (and Bella too) and Spencer's and now Dog By Nature. Our old man is an old salt; that means he was in the Navy (like the Village People's song). In the Navy, when someone did something good that was out of the ordinary, something above and beyond the norm, they would often be recognized with a "BZ" message or flag hoist or letter of commendation. In the nautical phonetic alphabet, the letter "B" is pronounced "BRAVO" and the letter "Z" is pronounced "ZULU." Hence the "BZ" message is commonly referred to as a "BRAVO-ZULU" and it means "WELL DONE." There is a signal flag for each letter in the alphabet; the BRAVO flag is solid red with a triangular bite missing from the fly side; the ZULU flag is square with the base of four different colored triangles on each side (yellow, blue, red and black). We have only given this award out once to date; that was to Mogley and Bella. Now we would like to make the second presentation of the highly coveted and prestigious Bravo-Zulu Award. On behalf of all the dogs that Spencer, along with HM and HD, have helped find homes, and those that HM and HD will help to find homes, we, The Bumpass Hounds of Bumpass, Virginia, do hereby present the Bumpass Hound BRAVO-ZULU Award to Spencer (posthumously) and Dog By Nature (HM & HD). This award is not one to be passed on or transferred. It is for retention and display by the recipients only. There are no rules or requirements that go with it. Mogley and Bella have already met the requirements, and so have Spencer and HM and HD. It's nothing fancy and no money comes with it, but the recipients have already received their reward, and it is NOT a stuffy that squeals or a treat. If HM and HD like, they're welcome to copy the award and put it on their blog page and Spencer's too. Let's have a big round of applause for HM and HD and lets all remember Spencer and smile; he'd like that as he watches down over us.. Let's hear it for them all HM and HD stand up and take a bow - WELL DONE. Why not stop over at Dog By Nature and leave a congratulatory comment of encouragement for all that they are doing for us.

Congratulations to the first recipients of the Bravo Zulu award! Well deserved! Also, that was interesting about Jeb Stuart. We knew about him, but didn't know his name was really J.E.B.

See ya!

Hi Sophie

That was a excellent post - and the award is a really lovely idea. A very special award for very special dogs.

We will drop over and check out Dog by Nature too.

We got your letter in the post today - have sent you an email too - but just to say again how touched we are by your very kind generosity. The little man was delighted with the postcards also. Many thanks again.

Cool idea for an award. It also gives us another idea for J.E.B.'s name. Perhaps it's Juliet Echo Bravo?

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
