SPECIAL NEEDS DOGS NEED HELP

<-- ABBY & HOMER J. -->

Hey Hounders,
It' Abby and Homer J., two rescue dogs from the
Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary. Yep, no coincidence that we volunteered for today's post as you'll see in a moment. Dad wants us to tell y'all that he's sorry for the play problem with yesterday's video post of Boru and Jubal. Dad thinks he got it fixed and would like y'all to open yesterday post, even if you already read it, and see if the video runs now. It takes a minute to buffer but that's no big deal.

We got an update from Ms. Carol up at A.H.G.R.R. & S. So we'd like to pass on the new info to our friends. Our big brother Gordon, who went to The Rainbow Bridge on January 20 th, 2008 also came to mom and dad from Almost Heaven, when he was about 10 years old. Gordon was totally blind when he was adopted to join this pack. Even though he was blind, Gordon required very little special considerations and he lived to be over 15 years old. A blind dog does, of course, have a few special needs. He has to be assisted in learning the lay of the land (floor plan, yard, doors, etc) until he has it imprinted in his mind. Other dogs, in our case, provided this guidance. Once he has it down he's good to solo. A fenced yard, of course, is also a must have.

Well, Ms. Carol has a couple of VERY special dogs who are looking for foster or permanent homes. If you are thinking about adding a canine friend, please consider them. These dogs really would welcome a home environment rather than the chain link barriers and crates/cages of a shelter environment.

Sable
Sable's elderly owner could no longer care for her, and so Sable ended up in a shelter. Luckily for her, this shelter works with Almost Heaven on a regular basis, and we agreed immediately that she should come "live" with us. This is a very kind, gentle old dog who is about 12 years young. We are having her evaluated for a possible low thyroid condition, but that is an easy "fix" and doesn't cost a lot of money to maintain. She would love to have a retirement home for her final few years.

Radio
Radio - Can you say "cute"? This little 4 month old puppy was born blind and with a stub tail. His owners just didn't have the time for him , and so he came to us. The vets say he is completely healthy other than the loss of his sight; which is not reversible. Blind dogs are easy to live with, once they learn where things are; they are truly remarkable. We've had several people adopt blind dogs in the past and I'm sure they would be more than happy to offer any help needed in transitioning this sweet puppy into a home. We would prefer that he go to a home without a lot of small children or rough playing dogs.

These are two special needs dogs that are looking for new homes. Maybe your situation will allow you to consider either adopting one of these dogs or helping to find someone trustworthy who may be able to help. A.H.G.R.R. & S. is located in Delray, WV, not far from Wincester, VA (birthplace of Patsy Cline) which is along interstate highway I-81.

Please give our predicament some consideration. We'd like you you to pass this information along if at all possible; maybe even post it your own bloggie. As always, we are grateful to y'all and thanks for stopping by.

Please give thought to our friends Spencer and Honey who have crossed The Rainbow Bridge, and when you do, please smile and think happy thoughts.

OOPS. Muzzer thinks Radio is such a cutie, and she has had blind doggies before. Dad thinks Teka would be too rough ... Dad usually wins these, so don't get excited.

We hope they find the best home ever. If they were in the Rocky Mountains we would asking for them. We have known two blind dogs, if we did not tell you they were blind, you would never know. They get by from memory, smell, hearing and lots of love.

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
