WE'RE WORRIED ABOUT THE PIG FLU

ARE WE GOING TO GET THE PIG FLU?
Heya Hounders,
It's me, little Jenny. I'm worried. We're all pretty worried. The radio, TV and newspapers are always telling us that we're all gonna get pig flu if we don't wear nose masks and wash our paws/hands 72 times a day and use that stinky "germ free" stuff up by the kitchen sink. Even the Vice President said to stay out of confined spaces so we're refusing to go into our crates or go for rides in the car, like to the vet's. Boru sneezed this morning so we're not letting him out of the basement. We asked dad when we we're gonna die of the pig flu and told us not to be silly. He went on the Internet and the ASPCA says this about the "Swine Flu:"
Can My Pet Catch Swine Flu? (That's the same as pig flu. - TBH)
Don't worry, pet parents! The recent, rapid outbreak of the H1N1 virus, previously known as swine flu, appears to present little risk of infecting our furry friends. In the past few weeks, only humans have been affected by the new virus, and it's still unknown how the virus will impact other species.
"Currently there's no data demonstrating any risk of dogs and cats contracting this strain of the virus," says Dr. Louise Murray, Director of Medicine at the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Hospital in New York City. "However, owners of pet pigs, as well as farmers, should monitor their animals' health more closely and take steps to limit transmission from humans to pigs and vice versa."
If you do count a pet pig as your animal companion, please consult with your veterinarian about a Type A influenza vaccine, which is available and recommended for all healthy swine.
Dr. Miranda Spindel, Director of ASPCA Veterinary Outreach, adds: "Swine influenza or swine flu is one of the leading causes of respiratory disease in swine throughout the world. Like most influenza A viruses, swine flu generally causes high levels of illness in pigs, but fatalities are uncommon."
For the latest information about the outbreak and your pet's health, please visit the Center for Disease Control (
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu). If you suspect your pet is ill or if he exhibits any sudden changes in behavior, please contact your veterinarian immediately.
Read the ASPCA's official statement on swine flu.

That makes us feel a bit better. It's funny but if you think about being sick too much you seem to be able to make yourself feel like you are really sick. Oh, we're no dismissing the pig flu; we'll take precautions but we're not gonna lock ourselves in basement (Did anyone let Boru out yet?) If we start to feel sick we'll stay home and cover our snoots when we sneeze, get plenty of rest (that's a no brainer) and wash our paws and stuff, but we aren't going to make ourselves sick with worry trying not to make ourselves sick with pig flu. Everyone stay healthy. What are you and your family doing about the Swine Flu?

What are we doing about it? Well, we're reading about it. That's much safer than having it.

Did you let Boru out of the basement yet?

I think we had best all lock the hooomans in the basement so they don't get sick. If we only let them out to feed us and give us walkies, we should be OK.

I like your idea about not going into my crate. I think Mom should stay home from work so I don't have to be in my crate.

Kat

I think I need to stay away from the boy furry beast because he's a pig and probably has the flu.

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
