In memory of our bestest blog buddy Spencer who has taken the journey to The Rainbow Bridge; and to our good friend Golden Honey who has gone to join him. They are both much loved dogs and are terribly missed by those of us who knew them. Please, don't forget to remember them both today and smile.

Mr. White is another senior homeless boy at Almost Heaven Golden Retiever Rescue and Sanctuary who is also looking for his furever home. 11 year old Mr. White became homeless when his owner passed away and no one else was in a position to offer this kindly old gent a home. Mr. White is a sweetheart of a dog - - - - - - - he loves everything and everyone - and all he asks is a home where he can retire and be loved for the rest of his life. Mr. White is at least partially deaf, so a fenced yard or someone who leash walks (all the time) is a must for him. SUCCESS. WE DID IT! We were trying to get at least one guest book entry from each of the 50 United States and D.C. and one from as many different countries as we can. We're were just about there but got hung up on 49 with just one state missing, SOUTH DAKOTA. We'd even solicited anyone from SODAK to help us out. Good news: as of Sept 30, 2009 we have an entry from all 50 states. A really big thanks to Lynette Raesly in Howard, South Dakota for signing our book. ADOPT A PET IN NOVEMBER

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRR) on our page further down, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

Can someone please make room in their heart and home for Stormy? Stormy needs to find a forever home. Stormy was purchased as breeding stock, but he has a congenital heart defect that is genetic and so he could not be used. His heart condition does not require any special care or medication at this time, but will need to be monitored throughout his life. Stormy is very active - he would be a great dog for folks who like to walk, hike, or throw a ball. He's a handsome boy and he's waiting now to go home with some lucky person. So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. A DOG'S PURPOSE

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's fami ly surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.' Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
-When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
-Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride
-Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
-Take naps.
-Stretch before rising.
-Run, romp, and play daily.
-Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
-Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
-On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
-On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
-When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
-Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
-Be loyal.
-Never pretend to be something you're not.
-If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
-When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
-ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY

GORDON - A GREAT RESCUE

Gordon was abandoned by his "life long" owner at about age 7 when he was found to be going blind. He was rescued from an Atlanta area shelter by Carol and Skip at Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary. He joined our pack as a "special needs" dog, totally blind with two detached retinas, but it turned out his only real need was a loving home. He thrived within the pack and lived 15+ years. He was a beloved "Bumpass Hound." We lost Gordie, very unexpectedly, to cancer in January '08. We all miss him terribly, especially the girls, Shelby and Abby, by whom he was fussed over much like a grandfather. We were truly blessed and priviledged to be allowed to have Gordon live with us as a Bumpass Hound.

POPLAR SPRINGS ANIMAL SANCTUARY

Poplar Springs, a 501(c)3 charitabil organization, provides a safe, loving home for neglected, qbused or abandoned farm animals. Animals are referred to the sanctuary by humane societies who have confiscated them from cruelty cases or have rescued them from abandonment. Aftern their arrival they are provided with veterinary care, nourishing food and a warm shelter.
