THE BUMPASS HOUNDS AND KITTIES

Welcome to our blog.

In memory of our bestest blog buddy Spencer who has taken the journey to The Rainbow Bridge; and to our good friend Golden Honey who has gone to join him. They are both much loved dogs and are terribly missed by those of us who knew them. Please, don't forget to remember them both today and smile.

Scroll down a bit for the daily blog postings down under our featured articles. Spend some time browsing around; have some fun. We've got lots of interesting things to check out (we think).

TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES? If you encounter a problem with our blog page we'd like you to email us about it if you have the time at bumpasshounds@hughes.net

APOLOGIES: Dad says to offer an apology to everyone of our readers because we are so far behind in reading y'all's blogs and leaving comments on your sites and reading our emails but we're working on it. The dang puppy takes a lot of mom and dad's time .

TODAY IS MY DAY

Hey Hounders,
Y'all will never guess who's having a great day today; today is my day. Do any of you know a saucy 75.7 lb gorgeous girl Golden Retriever? Who could that attractive girl be?

Radar and I went to the CRAH today for weigh-ins. Radar is now 46.7 lbs and growing like gangbusters. And I, the mystery girl, tipped the scales at 75.7 lbs. Dad's scheduled weight for me today is 87 lbs. So I, the mystery girl, am 11 lbs below my goal weight. My total weight loss since June 1, 2008 is a mere 71 POUNDS. How about them apples? On the way home dad said that Radar and me both deserved a reward so he took us to McDonald's. He said it was OK for me to splurge because I was a little on the skinny side. Heheheheheheh. Yeah, right dad! Radar and I each has a double cheeseburger and some fries. I'll have to eat light tonight; those double cheeseburgers go right to my butt.
I feel really good about myself today. It's been a lean and mean year plus for me. Thanks to Purina OM kibble, cut green beans and carrots I've made it. Dad says that now he has to work out something called a maintenance diet for me. He says that we'll probably do at least two more bi-weekly weigh-ins to monitor my weight but then he thinks we'll only go for weigh-in once a month.
It's like a dream come true. I can just see it now! Just like a Hollywood musical on TV. Me and the girls singing about ME:

(SOPHIE)
I feel pretty, Oh, so pretty,
I feel pretty and witty and bright!
And I pity Any dog who isn't me tonight.
I feel charming, Oh, so charming
It's alarming how charming I feel!
And so pretty That I hardly can believe I'm real.
See the pretty dog in that mirror there:
Who can that attractive dog be?
Such a pretty face,
Such a pretty coat,
Such a pretty smile,
Such a pretty me!
I feel stunning And entrancing,
Feel like running and dancing for joy,
For I'm loved By a pretty wonderful gang!

(SHILOH, ABBY, SHELBY, JENNY)
Have you met my good friend Sophie,
The craziest dog in the pack?
You'll know her the minute you see her,
She's the one who is in an advanced state of shock.
She thinks she's in love.
She thinks she's in Spain.
She isn't in love,
She's merely insane.
It must be the heat Or some rare disease,
Or too much to eat Or maybe it's fleas.
Keep away from her, Send for the vet!
This is not the Sophie we know!
Modest and pure,
Polite and refined,
Well-bred and mature And out of her mind!

(SOPHIE)
I feel pretty,
Oh, so pretty
That the city should give me its key.
A committee Should be organized to honor me.

(SHILOH, ABBY, SHELBY, JENNY)
La la la la . . .

(SOPHIE)
I feel dizzy,
I feel sunny,
I feel fizzy and funny and fine,
And so pretty,
Miss America can just resign!

(SHILOH, ABBY, SHELBY, JENNY)
La la la la . . .

(SOPHIE)
See the pretty dog in that mirror there:
(SHILOH, ABBY, SHELBY, JENNY)
What mirror where?

(SOPHIE)
Who can that attractive dog be?

(SHILOH, ABBY, SHELBY, JENNY)
Which?
What?
Where?
Whom?

(SOPHIE)
Such a pretty face,
Such a pretty coat,
Such a pretty smile,
Such a pretty me!

(SHILOH, ABBY, SHELBY, JENNY)
Such a pretty me!

(ALL)
I feel stunning And entrancing,
Feel like running and dancing for joy,
For I'm loved By a pretty wonderful gang!

Woooooo Sophie...many congratulations and good wishes for continued success. And also, congratulations on the double C! Wooo..I never have had more than half a Steak n Shake Single. But a treat is a treat in my book. Maybe if I get down below 30 pounds, Muzzer would get me a whole one? I'd work out for that.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO SIGN THE BUMPASS HOUNDS GUEST BOOK

We, and our readers, would really like it if you could please leave your blog site address (if you've got one) with your comment. We want to check you out.

SUCCESS. WE DID IT! We were trying to get at least one guest book entry from each of the 50 United States and D.C. and one from as many different countries as we can. We're were just about there but got hung up on 49 with just one state missing, SOUTH DAKOTA. We'd even solicited anyone from SODAK to help us out. Good news: as of Sept 30, 2009 we have an entry from all 50 states. A really big thanks to Lynette Raesly in Howard, South Dakota for signing our book. We want y'all to please sign our guest book if you haven't already done so. Thank you to every one for stopping by. - TBH&K

ADOPT A PET IN NOVEMBER

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRR) on our page further down, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

ATTENTION GOLDEN RETRIEVER LOVERS
Can someone please make room in their heart and home for Stormy? Stormy needs to find a forever home. Stormy was purchased as breeding stock, but he has a congenital heart defect that is genetic and so he could not be used. His heart condition does not require any special care or medication at this time, but will need to be monitored throughout his life. Stormy is very active - he would be a great dog for folks who like to walk, hike, or throw a ball. He's a handsome boy and he's waiting now to go home with some lucky person. You can check him out, and other adoptable dogs looking for 4ever homes, at the Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary website:

Remember, Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary is a registered 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization and operates solely on donations from kind hearted souls such as youself. All donations are 100% tax deductible so ya can give it to AHGRR sted of giving it to Uncle Sam. Any little bit will help. Please make a donation at:
http://www.almostheaven-golden-retriever-rescue.org/ And if'n ya can't be given money in these hard times then hows 'bout at least a little thought or prayer for this little guy to make it through this manure impediment. We'd all precite it. Thank'n ya kindly for tak'n the time to read about Stormy.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.

A DOG'S PURPOSE

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's fami ly surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.' Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
-When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
-Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride
-Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.
-Take naps.
-Stretch before rising.
-Run, romp, and play daily.
-Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
-Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
-On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
-On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
-When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
-Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
-Be loyal.
-Never pretend to be something you're not.
-If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
-When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.
-ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY
