THANKSGIVING EVE

SAFELY SHELTERED FOR THANKSGIVING

This is the 2nd and final installment on the rescue transport of King, a partially deaf and blind senior Golden Retriever, from the Fluvanna County SPCA to Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary (AHGRR). AHGRR is just a bit off of the beaten path. Dad says that he can always hear the banjos (a la "Deliverance") as he winds his way through the rocks towards AHGRR in Hidden Valley. (Who is Ned Beatty and why was he screaming?) The pond means that AHGRR is just up the road a piece.

-
Homer laid right by dad's side for the entire trip. Homer likes to go for rides in the cars and trucks. Upon arrival at AHGRR, King stands in the back of the rescue wagon and surveys the surroundings.

-
-
-
Mr. Skip kept King from jumping out on to the ground. We know that you're anxious but at your age a little assistance is in order. Once out on the ground King started sniffing and got somewhat out of focus; must be the altitude.

-
-
-
King was really interested in some of the other dogs in the nearby pens and paddocks. Since he had only received his vaccinations the previous day and his shot history was unknown, he 'll be in isolation for a few days but he'll get lots of care and attention. King is on a lot of medicines for various conditions he has developed due to lack of proper veterinary care. Maybe you can help him get better.

-
-
-
Ms. Carol and Mr. Skip ushered King down to the isolation building and Homer and Dad said goodbye and headed back home down I-81 to I-66, just another 2.5 hours and they'd be home. They arrived safe and sound at about 6:30 PM. A long but rewarding and satisfying day. Our sincere thanks to Ms. Amy and Ms. Cheryl at the Fluvanna County SPCA and of course to Ms. Carol and Ms. Skip at AHGRR. Because of these 4 dedicated people, King has a GReat chance for finding his healthy and loving furever retirement home. Do you have room in your heart and home for King?

WHY DO WE NEED YOUR VOTES

KING IS ONE OF THE REASONS

Maybe you've been asking yourself why are TBH&K such pains about this voting for AHGRR; they're always bugging us to vote. Well dad says that this picture he took on his Saturday Rescue Transport captures the scent (or was that essence) of it and pretty much says it all. We want your votes so that old senior Golden ladies and gentlemen, like King here, don't have to face the bleak future of the green needle at a well intentioned, but yet lonely and desolate, animal shelter. It is suspected that King was dumped on the street and reported as an abandoned dog when his elderly owner could no longer care for him. Fortunately the Animal Control Authority that picked him up turned him over to a caring shelter that held him for the obligatory 10 days to be claimed. When King wasn't claimed they contacted Ms. Carol at AHGRR to see if she could accepted King and, of course, she did. So our dad ferried him from the recovery shelter up to AHGRR. King has some major medical problems, probably due to his owners inability to afford proper veterinary treatment. Besides being partially blind and almost totally deaf, this 12 year old has serious ear infections and to top it all off, he has checked as heart worm positive. But he seems to otherwise be strong for his age. There will be a cost associated with treating King for his aliments and significant medication bills. A grant from The Animal Rescue Site would be used to offset these and similar expenses incurred to help these senior Goldens as well as to help feed the residents awaiting a furever home. That is why we want YOU to vote for AHGRR in the contest. Over this past weekend we were #4 in West Virginia and #249 nationally. This morning we are #3 in West Virginia and and moved up 10 spots to #213 nationally. With YOUR help we might be able to qualify for one of the grants being distributed among worthy shelters; AHGRR is worthy. Directions on how to vote are provided at the bottom of this post.

PLEASE VOTE FOR AHGRR
Please go to this website:
http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/shelterchallenge.faces?siteId=3

The webpage is somewhat temperamental but the above link is correct. Please give the page enough time to fully load to "Done" before proceeding. Then we want you to enter the following red data into the boxes provided:
Shelter Name: Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue
Country: United States
State: WV
City: Capon Bridge
Then click on "Search." The page will then do its' thing and will end up showing the location of AHGRR: Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc. Capon Bridge, WV 26714. And, more importantly, a "VOTE" button will appear. Click on the "VOTE" button. You will then have to identify a particular animal in a photo to confirm your vote; this eliminates machine voting. You then will be thanked for your vote to indicate that your vote has registered. You can cast one vote every day for your favorite rescue organization. Voting began on September 14th, 2009, and ends at midnight (PST) on December 20th, 2009. The more friends you can rally to vote for your favorite rescue organization, the better its chances of winning. Every vote, every day counts - shelters can pull ahead even during the last few days with enough support. Get people involved! The homeless pets awaiting adoption at Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary are counting on us

Great story and pictures about Mr. King.
We hope he finds a forever home very soon.
Our score on Boru Turkey quiz was 12 questions right. We are better at eating than getting a good score.

PS: Great Mystery Guest! Please don't be surprised if you don't get a lot of guesses. There is a certain blog-bully who boycotts the MG's site and encourages others to do the same. Trust me, we know all about it. :)

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
