GREAT NEWS

THE ANIMAL RESCUE SITE
2009 SHELTER CHALLENGE

Voting ended Sunday, December 20, at 11:59 p.m. PST.
Winners were announce yesterday, December 23rd.

WE ARE LISTED AMONG THE WINNERS! Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary finished The Animal Rescue Site Shelter Challenge in 1st place for West Virginia shelters. This means that AHGRR has won a $1,000.00 grant. The success of the AHGRR campaign is in no small part due to the efforts of the followers of this blog coupled with many other AHGRR supporters. We are sure that our followers played a big part in this successful quest. Evidently, all you guys that had good Internet connections remembered to vote Sunday and we all were able to keep AHGRR #1 in WV.

WE'RE WINNERS
We are very happy to
announce that Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary is listed among the winners of The Animal rescue Site Shelter Challenge for having finished as the #1 shelter in the state of West Virginia. According to the rules, that means that AHGRR will be awarded a grant of $1,000.00 as a top state shelter.

We want to sincerely thank each of you that played along with us on our quest and took the time from your busy schedules to help us out by voting. Considering that we didn't join the effort until the 6th week of the contest we did remarkably well, that's the power of the paw. Next time we'll start our effort when the contest begins.

YOU CAN PLAY SANTA

Homer J. here with a Christmas wish that other dogs less fortunate than us can have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I was a shelter dog and mom and dad adopted me out of AHGRR so I know all about the loneliness that shelter and pound dogs endure this time of year. Christmas is a difficult time for shelter dogs. Everyone is involved with the hub-bub of family togetherness and shopping and all; there's no time to think about those out-of-sight, out-of-mind homeless dogs that are over populating the shelters around the country. Isn't Christmas supposed to be a time for giving unto others? Isn't it is better to give than to receive? Well here's your chance to play Santa to a homeless dog, a pup who has seen better days and really doesn't realize why he isn't laying on the carpet in front of the roaring fire with his faithful master or mistress. Teach your kids or grand kids about Christmas by giving them sponsorship of a homeless dog. Many of these dogs once had happy homes but fate placed them in a pound or shelter. You can give the gift of love to a homeless dog at Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary just by providing sponsorship for any dog or a dog of your choice. It's as simple as buying off of eBay. Please visit the AHGRR website at Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary . Almost Heaven is always being called upon to help Golden and Golden Mixes that include many Seniors and Special Needs dogs. They seem to always be swamped with requests, and have been able to accommodate all requests for help for the purebreds, and 99% of the requests for help for our Golden Mix Orphans. In order to assist more, an AHGRR alternative is to board some these of dogs (some are already in boarding) until an adoption or foster home is available. Boarding is costly and funding may limit the number of dogs that they can help. These are dogs whose owners are sick, have passed away, have had life changing events happen, or some have simply been dumped and left to die through no fault of their own. If you would like to help save a life ... and can afford to assist with boarding expenses ... AHGRR (and the furkids) would be most appreciative of your help! The cost to board ONE dog for a week is $ 35.00 - $70.00, depending on the facility available to us. Presently, AHGRR estimates that each new dog we commit to taking in may need to board for at least 2 weeks. AHGRR will gratefully accept any financial assistance offered. If you live in the D.C. VA, MD, PA, WV area and you think you are cut out to be a "foster parent", please contact AHGRR - they'd love to work with you. Most importantly, anyone can provide sponsorship and you can donate through PayPal using the website "donation" button or mail your sponsorship donation to Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue, P.O. Drawer D, Delray, WV 26714. I hope that you feel guilty enough, or charitable enough, to make a Christmas sponsorship donation.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DOING TOO LITTLE UNLESS YOU DO NOTHING AT ALL.

Here are just a few of the Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary dogs that are looking for a furever home and sponsorship. Others are listed on PetFinder.com under Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary, WV. Can you please help at least one of them? God Bless You, Everyone.

RONIN
2 - 3 year old Ronin is just a happy soul looking for the next "party". He knows a few commands and is housebroken. He needs a home where he can get rid of some of his energy - someone who would like to go for walks or throw a ball would be perfect for Ronin. He will chase kitties. Ronin is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.

FELLA
7 year old Fella would love to be "Home for the Holidays". This is a very loving dog, but he doesn't always like other dogs sharing his home. He is housebroken, knows basic obedience commands, and is absolutely gorgeous. Can't you just see him laying in front of your fireplace this winter? Fella is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.

SHAGGY
9 year old Shaggy came to rescue with his littermate. In spite of having been together their entire lives, these two dogs seem to do best when they are separated. Shaggy would like nothing better than to be some special person's best friend. This dog is very affectionate. Shaggy is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

BABY SCARLETT
3 - 4 year old Baby Scarlett has had a tough life - abandoned on a farm, tied out with no food, shelter, or water, her current litter of puppies finally ready to be on their own - - - - - - Baby Scarlett's future was not bright. But a local rescue group heard of her plight (alongwith 16 other dogs abandoned with her), and came to her aid. Too weak to rise on her own, she was rushed to the local veterinarian. Baby Scarlett was covered in mange, and in very bad physcial condition, but her personality never waivered - it is and has always been golden. Baby Scarlett is now ready for her forever home. She greets everyone with a big smile and wagging tail. She is a medium sized dog - maybe mixed with sheltie??? We truly don't know. What we do know is that she will make some very lucky person a wonderful, loving companion. Baby Scarlett is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

SUNNY K
Sunny K is about 9 - 10 years old. He was purchased at a yard sale by a lady who then turned him over to animal control because Sunny didn't get along with her cats. Sunny doesn't act his age. He's a nice boy who can be selective about his canine companions - - - - - - but wouldn't he look cute curled up in front of your fireplace this winter? He is very loving, and would love to find a forever home soon. Sunny K is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

ZEUS
3 year old Zeus needs to find a forever home. Zeus is housebroken and gets along with most other dogs. We require a standard fence for Zeus and he will only be placed in a home with adults only or children well into their teenage years. Zeus is just too active for the youngsters, though he settles and behaves beautifully for adults. Zeus is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and spayed/neutered.

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
