SUNDAY REPORT ON SATURDAY'S GOINGS ON

HERES THE DEAL
Heya Hounders,
Sophie here with my little buddy, Radar (shown begging for treats). Kinda a late Sunday post but we don't want to miss a day. Yesterday the little guy, Radar. got his rabies shot and then he came along with me to get weighed. He weighs 32 lbs. He has mastered going up stairs and is working on going down. Initially he wanted to just leap like Superdog and fly, like with his front paws out straight and everything, so mom and dad had to show him the one step at a time call out method like Gordon used to do. He's done well on that method today but we'll watch him doing it for a while. He requires no guidance at all to go up stairs but needs coaxing to be talked down, for the time being at least. He is blending in well with the rest of us although his "enthusiasm" can grate on you after a while. All of us , except Homer, have had to practice our snarls and growls to keep from getting bitten to death or loose an ear. Only Abby has given Radar any trouble and mom and dad keep and eye on her when she in the area; they actually keep close tabs on all of us except for Homer J. Homer is the most tolerant. Homer hasn't so much as sneered at Radar and he is being accosted all of the time. Jubal just gives Radar a sneer when he's had enough. Shelby uses the avoid him plan. I was initially afraid of Radar because he comes on so strong but now I'm more accepting and tolerant. He mixes well with the cats, he now pays them no mind and they pay him no mind. He cornered Alex a few days ago and was rewarded with a bitch slapping so he has a new respect for cats. Boru seems to like him though. He even initiated playing this evening but poor Radar didn't see Boru rolling around in front of him. We're posting our videos on You Tube now so all you have to do go to
http://www.youtube.com/ and search "The Bumpass Hounds" to see the videos in case they aren't here.

SATURDAY STUFF

Heya Hounders, Shelby Belle, the puppy from you know where, here with the Saturday post. Well today is supposedly gonna be a busy day for the dad. he has to take Sophie up to Confederate Ridge Animal hospital for her bi-weekly weigh in. Then there is a county rabies clinic with really great bargain prices and dad's hoping to get Alex, Boru and Radar their rabies shots for the year. So he's got a big plan but who knows if he'll get it all done. Radar is doing O.K. I haven't had much interaction with him yet. Abby got in trouble yesterday for not being nice to him and Jack got in trouble today for the same thing. Jack doesn't have the patience that Jubal, J.E.B., and Homer have and when the pup ambushed him he kinda over reacted. Of course the pup has a very alarming squeal when he is frightened and that makes it seem like he's dying when in fact he hasn't really been hurt; just really, really scared. Poor Homer J. seems to be able to take unlimited Radar abuse. He's got more patience than Jubal even. Sophie is afraid of Radar and runs away from him. It's pretty funny when Radar chases her and she's scampering away. It's a good thing that she lost all that weight or she'd drop dead from a heart attack from running so fast. The bigger Radar gets the less likely Abby id to confront him, but Jack will probably have to get some lessons from Mom and dad about good manners with the pup. The other day Radar cornered Alex in the hallway and he got rewarded with a rapid sequence face slapping. dad couldn't find any injury to Radar but once again he got frightened and squealed. Then today he stuck his face in Boru's chest and Boru was a bit more restrained. Radar has already mastered sitting for treats. he's doing quite well getting in the distribution line when mom or dad are passing out goodies and he does a very good sit. Are we sure he's really blind?

We still can't post videos and photos are difficult. Dad will try to get it fixed.

THE PATIENCE OF JUBE

Heya Hounders,
It's none other than Jubal, a.k.a. the Big Jubes, with today's input. Do y'all have any idea how exaserbating it can be to have a sniveling little puppy in your face all the time? Talk about an annoyance! I believe that I was the first of the gang to meet the new little fella. I believe it was last Sunday, about 5 years ago; well, it sometimes seems like 5 years ago even if it was only 5 days ago. That little pup has some mighty sharp needles attached to his jaw bones. My ears have more holes in them than mom's pasta strainer. And where in the dickens does he get all of his energy? Supposedly this little guy, his name is Radar by the way, well supposedly he's blind. That's probably the truth because he bumps into lots of things around the house, but let me assure you that Radar has no difficulty what so ever in finding me, especially if I'm trying - trying being the operative word here - to take a nap. Believe me, the pup has no problem what so ever finding in ambushing me from a far. No matter where I may be hiding or how much out of his range I think I am; I'm the target of abuse. Now I'm as tolerant as the next guy, more so if the next guy happens to be Jack, but PALEEZE, give me a break. Thank goodness the guy is staying out in the garage kennel when mom and dad are both out of the house. But if either one of them is home he now has full house priliges. It's fine with me as long as he's in his crate. It's only when he's awake and loose that I dread our guaranteed encounters. Perhaps his puppy teeth will all fall out and his adult teeth won't grow in; then he'll only be able to gum me to death. Is there no end to this torture? Somebody call the President BHO and tell him I'm being illegally tortured. Because of the weather we're having problems posting videos so we'll try again tomorrow.

TOTALLY PREVENTABLE

Last week, three Dogster dogs in the same family had to be euthanized as a result of antifreeze poisoning. A common automotive fluid, antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, an extremely toxic alcohol. Since it doesn't take much to seriously injure or kill a pet, every dog owner should be aware of the dangers of antifreeze.Find out what you should know about antifreeze ››

Heya Hounders,
Homer J. here today. We hate to start the post with something as tragic as this, but sometimes we need a stark reminder of the dangers we can face when our humans fail us. Whether it is by exposing us to toxicity in our own homes or by letting us wander the neighborhood to be subject to the carelessness or bevavior of others, we can be put at grave peril. Sure, accidents happen and probably always will, but our exposure to them can be minimized. Fenced yards alone will do a lot to prevent us from treking off to we we shouldn't be. A "doggie proofing" examination of the home environment can reduce the risk to us. Use of pet friendly and/or non-toxic cleaners and household products is something you can also do to help us out. How about the plants in the house or out in our fenced yard? Are they toxic to animals? What little fun we might have from running free around the neighborhood can be meaningless when we are able to get into other peoples property who have no responsibility for our well being. Why shouldn't someone be able to shoot us if we're in his chicken coop or in his pasture and harassing his horses. Why does your neighbor have to "dog proof" his garage if he has no animals of his own. Just whose responsibility is it to take care of us. Can you do a better job at helping to keep us safe. Does your spring cleaning effort have a safety plan for us? Do you use pet friendly anti-freeze? Do you properly store and dispose of hazardous stuff so that we don't get into it with our curiosity? Are your landscaping feature to which we have access pet friendly? Let's all try to keep safety and prevention in mind as we go through the daily grind. How about sitting down and taking a mental inventory of how safe your pets are from accidental death and hazards.

OBTW: Dad says to tell everyone that yesterday's photos are all of our Newfoundland Landseer dog Max, from 2 day's old up through 2 years old.

AHGRR&S NEWS LETTER

ON THE RADAR SCOPE:
Hey Hounders,
It's me, your little buddy radar (a.k.a radio). Mom and dad got the latest Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue (AHGRR) newsletter email yesterday. Here's what Ms. Carol sent out. And guess what? There's a part in it about me and mom and dad. Ms. Carol is the reason that I'm alive today to be able to have "my secretary" type this blog post out to y'all today. Ms. Carol didn't think it was necessary for me to be "put down" because I was born blind or because I was born without a tail. And then when I tested positive for parvo virus she rushed me to a vet hospital and had me treated rather than just have me die or have me put down as being to much trouble or expense. I sure appreciate it that she was there to watch out for me just as she, and Mr. Skip, do and have done for so many other hopeless cases. Ms. Carol and Mr. Skip are definitely the savers of hopeless cases, kinda like St. Jude. Dad tells mom that Ms. Carol is really Saint Carol in the canine world.

"Good Morning!
Just a quick note to let everyone know that Radio (aka Radar) is doing GREAT! His foster Mom and Dad have decided he's a keeper, so he has found his forever home with two very wonderful people.

Radio/Radar in his forever home

As you can see from the picture, he's growing up!

Take a Look at this: We have some truly wonderful people posting items for sale on ebay with some or all or the proceeds of the sale being donated to us. There is something for everyone here, folks. If you are looking for a gift, trinket, spell (yes, take a look), electronics, etc, go to this link:

http://donations.ebay.com/charity/charity.jsp?NP_ID=22930

Items are being added and sold often, so please keep checking in - - -

(We do not know all these sellers, so we cannot vouch for the quality of their merchandise, etc.)

Our fundraiser will be held on June 20th. Invitations have started going out - if you do not receive one - it's my fault - - - - - and it's simply an error in paperwork (combined with old age - lol). Just let me know, so we can get one out to you. Since this event is being held at the home of our supporters, we have chosen to not advertise it on the webpage for obvious reasons. Please feel free, however, to email me for information.

The fundraising event in Winchester (VA) has been postponed indefinitely. The paperwork and labor involved with getting the license and permits for it is simply overwhelming to me - and right now I just don't have the time to negotiate all the legal ins and outs of it. We do hope to have perhaps a Holiday Banquet or party at Charles Town Races. We are still investigating that possibility. (We do want to thank Blue Ridge Dog Training Club for being willing to help with the insurance requirement for the Winchester event. Perhaps we will be able to find enough manpower to hold it next year.)

We are in need (desperately) of short term boarding/fostering for incoming dogs who are not fully vaccinated. (Fully vaccinated is a series of at least 2 distemper/parvo vaccinations given 3 - 4 weeks apart.) Because we may never really know what made Radio so sick we are being very careful with our intakes so that they will be safe. PLEASE - if you can foster a dog for 2 - 4 weeks, or can find a veterinary hospital or boarding facility willing to board them for that long - let us know. (We are not looking for FREE boarding - we will pay a reasonable fee for it.) We currently have 2 Senior dogs waiting to come in - . They are a pair of 9 year old brothers, living outside and arthritic. We need to find a temporary spot for them while their vaccinations are brought current as it is doubtful that they have ever been vaccinated.

Thank you for your continued support. The current economic crisis in this country is taking it's toll on charities. We are thankful each day for having such wonderful people to help us make it through and save lives.

Carol

FOR CHANCE, GORDON, SPENCER, CHANDLER, MAXDOG, THE LUKE, THE BLUE, MAGGIE AND SO MANY OTHERS.

National Canine Cancer Foundation

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
