HAPPY BIRTHDAY RADAR

RADAR'S (A.K.A. - RADIO) ADOPTION PHOTO

Hey Hounders,
Today is Radar's first birthday anniversary. Yep, he has made it through his first difficult year. He was born blind, his eyes not fully developed, with a small bone stub for a tail and with a nasal passage deformity. It's not hard to fathom that he was a candidate for euthanasia but he was rescued from an uncertain fate by Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary. The photo above is "Radio's," as he was then called, adoption photo. At almost 3 months of age things were looking up for Radio to get a new home. While a potential home was being evaluated for Radio, he unexpectedly became extremely sick and was taken to a veterinarian hospital where he was diagnosed with the almost always fatal to puppies Parvo Virus. He was hospitalized for over a week and accumulated a hefty vet bill in the process. However, he somehow miraculously survived the ordeal and was ready to release back to Almost Heaven. One major obstacle to his immediate release was a requirement to have him quarantined for over 30 days. At that time Almost Heaven lacked a quarantine facility, which they have since built thanks to donations from nice people like you, and couldn't bring him back for fear of infecting other dogs at the shelter. Ms. Carol contacted our mom and dad to see if they knew anyone that could help. Of course they did; them. Seems we have a detached three car garage that is functioning as a storage facility and we also had a cyclone fence portable kennel. Why not clear a section of the garage and set up the fenced kennel inside; instant quarantine facility. So on May 11th mom and dad drove to Charlestown WV and discharged Radio from the vet hospital quarantine facility and brought him here to Bumpass. Of course we knew something was going on over at the big garage but we only caught an occasional glimpse of the pup. Mom decided that since he was blind she would call him Radar instead of Radio; close but different. After a month of being isolated from the rest of us, introductions were finally made in June. Like any new addition to the family, some accommodations had to be made, feelings soothed and friendships formed. Radar bonded with Sophie because she was the only one of us that tolerated his sometimes bratty behavior. Fortunately, as he aged Radar became a bit more civilized. Now he is just one of us. He does sleep in a crate at night but that's more for his comfort and mom and dad's desire to sleep at night. Turning out the lights does nothing to calm down Radar. Of course y'all know that Radar had a grand mal seizure this past weekend; his first and only, and hopefully his last. He suffered no noticeable injury other than breaking a claw on his left front paw. We have selected some representative photos of our little baby brother to trace the 9 months of his first year that he has spent with us as a Bumpass Hound. Radar, and all the rest of us, wants to thank Ms. Carol and Mr. Skip at AHGRR for saving him and allowing him to stay here after his quarantine was over. He hopes that any of you that can would send him a birthday present by voting for Almost Heaven in the Shelter Challenge or possibly sending a contribution to AHGRR. AHGRR has slipped from #29 nationally to #41 and we are losing ground to the #2 shelter in West Virginia; we need your help. Hip-Hip-Hooray for Radar. Happy Birthday buddy and may you have many, many more to come.

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
