ON THE RADAR SCOPE

RADAR HAS EPILEPSY

Radar is doing fine now, but we wanted to let all you hounders know that at about midnight Friday night he experienced an epileptic grand mal seizure in his crate. The convulsion lasted less than 3 minutes and his immediate recovery from disorientation only took about 10 minutes. It took about 12 hours for him to appear to be just about back to normal.
He was laying on his left side in the crate with his legs fully extended to the other side of the crate. He experienced uncontrollable muscle spasm with his legs kicking against the side of the crate. He was salivating profusely as though he was rabid but he appeared as though unconscious. Dad was able to pull him out of the crate and held him on the bedroom carpet until the seizure subsided. Mom has recorded the date, time and duration of the seizure and will closely monitor him for any further incidents. Of course if he has a another seizure he'll have to go to Doc Witter's hospital to be evaluated for medication.
He seemed a bit calmer than usual Saturday and he didn't want to hassle with Sophie (she actually was disappointed by his lack of attention to her.) He is eating and drinking normally now; he was not his usual enthusiastic self at breakfast.but ate well at dinner last evening. He is a bit more clingy to dad than he usually is. Dad wrestled with him on the bed and he, Radar - not dad, is alert and responsive.
The only injury is that he, Radar - not dad, split/broke a claw on his left fore foot against the side of the crate during the seizure but it doesn't seem to be painful unless dad's putting neosporine on it.
Radar had a good dinner last night and then him and dad played/wrestled again on the big bed. Radar then felt good enough to have a bitey face session with Sophie. She was growling away with her tail wagging wildly while Radar butt bumped her and snipped at her legs and ears.
Radar is still hanging close to dad this morning and he seems calmer than he usually acts. Mom's books all say that he, Radar - not dad, will be fatigued for a couple of days. Late last night he, Radar - not dad, was doing "watch dog" and barking loudly (11:20 PM) at the other dogs out in the back paddock. He was much better than he was at midnight Friday night. He, Radar - not dad, will be a year old tomorrow, Monday. Radar was born on 1/25/2009. We all love our bobtailed brat and pray that this will prove to be an isolated incident, but if it isn't we will all take care of him and be here for him. After all, he's one of us; he's family, he's a Bumpass Hound. You can c
heck out his recovery video at the bottom of this post.

Poor Radar...many dogs we know have/had epilepsy. Our friend Miss Rosie, who was a Lab/Golden cross had it for a looooong time, even before I, Gussie, came to live with Muzzer and the Dad. We know you will get good care, but we are still crossing paws that this is a one time thing.

Hehehe...we can shake hands too, but we always ignore that command when the camera is in range. Way to GO.

Oh Radar - avoid the seizures if you can - Coop has them and they are no fun and scare the peeps because they are so unpredictable.
But playing Bitey face is a good sign.

Happy Birthday Radar.
No more seizures for you, ok? They are scary.
I had one, and only one, years ago. I hope you don't have any more either.
Enjoy your Birthday

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
