OUR RADAR SCREEN AND STUFF

 "DOGS ROCK - CATS ROLL"

SOMETHING ABOUT OUR RADAR
Hey Hounders,
Peek-a-boo I don’t see you, because it’s me, Radar, the blind Bumpass Hound. I’m a red Golden Retriever but not quite like other GRs you may know. I was born in a puppy mill, blind at birth, with no tail (only a nub) and sinus cavity defects. Of course I wasn’t gonna be bringing in any big bucks at sale so I was probably headed to a puppy mill death by drowning or being shot. Fortunately, one of the workers asked if they could have me, strictly to save me from a certain demise. I was then shuttled up to Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary where Ms Carol took especially good care of me. I think she wanted to keep me as a house pet, However I got really sick one night and Ms. Carol recognized it as Parvo Virus so she took me to a vet in Charlestown WV and I was put in isolation while being treated.  I had a very dire week and almost died, but I survived and got stronger. After about 10 days I was ready to leave the vet and it was with a prognosis to survive Parvo, a rarity for a young pup like me. Unfortunately Ms. Carol couldn’t take me back to AHGRR because Parvo is highly contagious and I had to be quarantined for 8 weeks. AHGRR didn’t have any quarantine facility back then (they’ve since built one with donation money from people like you) and I would present a risk to all the other dogs. Ms.Carol called mom and Dad even though she knew that they had lots of other dogs living here. Ms. Carol thought that mom and dad might know someone else that could take me to quarantine. Mom and dad said that since it was spring tome and the weather was nice that they could set up a chain link 8′ x 6′ kennel inside the big 3 car detached garage that was well away from the house and dog paddock. So on May 11, 2009 mom and dad drove up to the vet in Charlestown WV and checked me out of the hospital and brought me down here to quarantine. They had set up my quarantine station in the detached garage with lots of toys, food, water and a bed.  For almost 2 months I was kept separate from the other dogs.  Mom and dad would sit with me in the front yard where i would be tethered and allowed to sit in my own #24 chair.  Of course afterall that time in kennel quarantine and all of the special attention that I got I wasn’t about to be going anywhere else, so I became a Bumpass Hound and was really rescued from death. So I’m definitely a rescue dog and “Rescue Dogs Rock.” Here are some photos of my first year as a Bumpass Hound.

Boru here with a joke for our cowdog buddy Hoot (a.k.a Dietz) out in Kansas.:
A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates
"Have you ever done anything of particular merit?" St. Peter asked.

'Well, I can think of one thing," the cowboy offered. "On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota , I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman.  I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn't listen.  So, I approached the largest and most tattooed biker and smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground.  I yelled, 'Now, back off or I'll kick the crap out of all of you!'"
St. Peter was impressed, "When did this happen?"
"Couple of minutes ago."

A VERY SPECIAL PUP
Three year old Luke is a total sweetheart.  He has never met a person or pet that he didn't love.  Luke is eager to please, and he is crate trained.  Luke is also deaf, so he will need a fenced yard and someone who will understand his only handicap is his inability to hear.  Luke is in a situation a lot like our dog Radar who is blind.Luke needs a home.  If you can't adopt, maybe you can sponsor.

Radar....So, are you going to celebrat your gotcha day? We have enjoyed reading about your adventures this year. I'm a Rescue tooo. But I only had a little rescue adventure, and mine was over quick. Maybe that is why I don't rock?

Sigh.

I'm innocent of all charges!!! Encouraging reckless poetic license with a limerick is a crime??? Holy cow Batman! I plead temporary foo fooness that resulted in an inflated ego and subsequent break with reality. I thought I was a poet, but I was wrong. I thought ANYone could be a poet, but I was very, very, VERY wrong.

Having said that... reading all those so-called limericks was punishment enough! I throw myself on the mercy of the court. Pfffttt

P.S. Dear Radar, looks like I might be on the lam for awhile. Do you think you could put in a good word to the Feds for me? Congrats on your escape from the puppy mill and choosing the Bumpass Hounds and Kitties to be your family... good instinct:)

Thank you for writing about special rescues. Did you know that short tails can wag faster than long ones? Short tails don't get caught under chairs and in doors. Short tails are special tails. It is a gift.

Go Radar!

Deer Radar,

First let me say that you are very handsome boy wif real sweet smile. You are kinda boy that my the Mom would love to hug and hug and HUG.

I kinda fink if you are Lucky... all fings in life happen so you get to where we are supposed to be. And if ever fing you have gone frew did not happen... you would likely not be a Bumpi!

Therefore, even though I tear up readin your story, I am happy wif where it all led. You score a real good family, Radar... but then, you all ready know that!!!

I know you also agree wif me... Rescue is a Golden opportunity... for ever one (most of all the peoples who have the good fortune to know and love us!)!

Congratulations on your first year and may there be many many more... wif updates!!!

wif love from the Luke

P.S. I was confused last night about the picture of another dog above your bit about limericks... then when I read your comment this morning about visiting your blog, I thought you must have just confused the two of us. Maybe I'm all wrong. Did the other dog do something about limericks too? If so, sorry and just ignore my earlier comment. Sometimes I'm slow on the uptake...

I loved reading the entire sad sad happy ending story!!! Thank you for sharing. Doggies like you is what we should all try to adopt first, when we even get the chance. I mean, you wouldn't be where you are today if it wasn't for one kind hearted worker.

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations.
