WHAT'S GOING ON AT ALMOST HEAVEN

AHGRR NEWS

Hey Hounders,
Well we got a very important news letter from Ms. Carol up at Almost Heaven Golden Retriever rescue and Sanctuary and we thought that we'd pass it along to all of you.  here is what's happening now up at AHGRR:

Hi:
First off - I want to apologize to anyone that contacted me and I have not responded to.  Apparently, there is a "glitch" in our server - again - - If you have tried to contact me and I didn't answer you - please try again.

Please don't forget to vote for us in the Shelter Challenge.  Ritchie County has pulled far ahead of us, but it's not too late for a comeback.  The contest does not end until April 18th.  I KNOW we can do this - - - - - and I cannot express to you how much the money would mean to us.

Winter has finally breathed what we hope is it's last breath.  Though we did not suffer anything catastrophic losses here - we were not left unscathed, either.  We have a good portion of fencing down on the ground that we can hopefully just reinstall once the ground dries out.

Our old "dog car" (Windstar), which was buried for weeks and weeks has been in the shop more than on the road since we dug it out.  What is really scary is that it left us on the road - with dogs - twice.  It is still making strange noises - and is now parked in our driveway.  We just cannot decide whether to invest any more money in it or not.  As we are both frequently on the road - in opposite directions - we may not have much choice but to invest in more repairs.

Our Yukon is also aging rapidly (when you drive 500 - 1,000 miles/week  - that happens), so we are going to have to start looking for more dependable transportation - soon.  In addition - it is our only lifeline out of here in the winter months, so we are hesitant to literally run it to death.  If you or someone you know has a vehicle to donate, please, please, please let us know.  I can assure you that it will be put to good use.

Other casualties of the winter were our well head, which has developed a significant hole, our septic system whose drain fields are totally saturated, and painting and caulking of all buildings -

The floor and windows in one of the kennels will need to be repaired/replaced - - - - - as will the air conditioners.  We have also developed a significant roof leak in one of the buildings - probably from the constant expanding of ice/snow.

We have so many new faces here now:

Buddy - 4 years old, housebroken, owners could not care for him any more.  This is a good dog who was in a bad situation.  Buddy is housebroken, easy going, and one handsome dude.
 Buddy

Penny - 12 year old Penny's elderly owner was barely able to care for herself, much less her faithful old friend.  No, Penny is not a golden - but she is a total sweetheart and she would love to find a retirement home - soon.  Penny is totally housebroken, gets along with other pets, and likes a good snooze in the sun.

  Penny

Nickee - Nickee was dumped alongside the road in a very rural area of WV.  He was then hit by a car and his hip dislocated.  A kind lady took Nickee in, but was unable to afford the vet care he needed.  Sadly, it has now been a year since his accident - so the damage done may be permanent.  He gets around just fine, though, so even if we are advised to leave well enough alone, he is highly adoptable.  Nickee's foster Mom says that Nickee gets along with all dogs and cats, is housebroken, and a quiet guest in her home.

  Nickee

We also currently have a 9 month old female in boarding.  She will be vetted this week and transported here soon.  I'm sorry - I don't have pictures of her yet.

All of these dogs need sponsors - our funds are extremely low right now so any and all help is deeply appreciated.  These are just a few of the new dogs here - - - - - - - - - and we received 3 additional requests for help yesterday.

Please don't forget to order your Jenny McMurtrie pins or magnets if you haven't already done so.  I just received our order for March/April and will get them in the mail to those of you who ordered them, this week.

We have bounced around several fundraising ideas for the fall, but nothing has materialized so far.  I am in the middle of cataract surgeries (my right eye was operated on last week and I hope to have my left eye surgically restored next week) - so I'm a little slow in getting things moving.  I would like to have a reunion - - -  the problem would be where?  We could hold it here - - - but I know it's a long drive for many of you - - - - -

I want to thank everyone for your continued support.  Times are very hard right now - for all of us -

TOP BOMB
This video has nothing to do with us.  It's about what our dad used to do when he was in the Navy.  Dad was an A-6E Intruder pilot based at the Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Washington.  He flew off of aircraft carriers in the Pacific Fleet based out of San Diego, California (Ranger, Kitty Hawk, Constellation).  A Seattle TV station, KING Channel 5, did a news story about the A-6s based at Whidbey Island.  The Washington Woos mom got to fly in the back seat of an Air Force F-16 trainer so she might find this to be interesting, especially since she lives up by Seattle now.  We're pretty sure that the reporter, Jeff Renner, is still doing news/weather on KING.  It's a little long and is probably boring to non-aviation enthusiasts.

That's really neat! I was stationed at Whidbey from
1983-1989. I was with the Prowler community though.

Hey! I wanted to let you know that tonight when I came to your blog, I had the sound on for my computer--I always have it turned off because my husband is always home, we're watching tv, etc. But he's not home tonight and the sound is on for the first time in a long time. But I had no idea that your blog played the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." It's been 2 weeks since Cowboy left us, and this song that I have listened to 3 times tonight has touched my heart...Thanks for that!! You all are the best!! Enjoy your weekend!!!

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
