It's me Homer, the Bumpass Hounds (and Kitties) senior representative. Y'all probably know that I'm a second hand senior. I'm in the autumn of my life and I've been truly blessed to have been saved from dispair and granted a second chance at happiness. My manners and personality indicate that I was born into a loving environment and raised with proper training and well cared for, but somewhere along the line something happened to cause me to end up in a kill shelter in southwest Virginia. The personnel there noticed my personality and condition and skirted regulations about adoption periods and somehow kept me going under the guise of shelter greeter. There wasn't a big demand for adoptions of senior dogs like myself; seems most people want the cute, cuddily puppies. Anyway, my situation became tenuous and things were looking bleak. At the last minute, literally, I was taken from the shelter and transported to Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS. It was made known by AHGRRS that I was available for adoption. After a period of time I was loaded into the transport van and made my way to a drop-off site where I met what turned out to be my new mom and dad. Seems that they like older guys like me. They took me to a place where a lot other dogs, and cats, lived with them. I was the oldest but not by a lot. Since then I have been loved and well cared for and given the respect of my stature. I am happy and I love my mom and dad and extended family of brothers and sisters; both canine and feline. My mom and dad say that I am in my furever home, no matter how long a period I get to stay with them. I know love, I give love and I am loved. I am not forgotten.
There is a blogging buddy of ours down in Houston, TX that has a story very much like my own in ways; he was in a shelter and someone came to give him a second chance. His name is Lucky Luke; a.k.a. "The Luke."

After two years as a second chance senior, Luke has been stricken with cancer. His mom, Amanda Wright, has been devastated by this situation, as are all of us TBH&K members. The Luke used to blog almost daily but, understandably, we haven't heard much from him or his mom since his condition has worsened. We hold The Luke, and his mom, in our daily prayers. Now we can let The Luke and his mom know that he is also not forgotten. Here is a blog post that tells us all about a way that we might help to lift The Luke's and his mom's spirits.

Callin' all furends of the LUKE an' the MOM - we needs youz help NOW!
We are needin' your help an' we gotta do this fast 'cuz the Luke needs some really strong Power of the Paw that he can see an' smell an' touch an' so does the mom. Our momma contacted Golden Retriever Rescue of Houston an' got PURRmission to send cards an' good wishes to the Luke usin' their address (the Luke is kinda shy 'bout his) an' sssshhhhh, you can't tell the Luke or the Mom or the Bleu 'bout this. If they wander over they will find out but we have pee-mail that tells us the Mom is not watchin' her bloggy 'cause it makes her sad an' she doesn't wanna be sad 'round the Luke.
So, tell your momma or dadda that you needs a card to send to the Luke (Valentines an' friendship cards are good) an' tell your momma or dadda that you will help by lickin' the envelope an' escorting' your momma or dadda to the USPS office (walks are good fur alla' us, ya know).
We gotta hurry an' hurry fast 'cause the Luke is gettin' ready to complete his Circle of Life an' will be leavin' fur Heaven, but we don't want him to go anywhere 'til he sees alla' our cards an' letters so he can carry alla' our l♥ve wif him to keep him warm when he watches us from the stars an' waits fur the Mom an' us to come see him when we do our Circle of Life.
Send cards an' letters an' good stuff to:
the Luke an' the Mom (the Bleu, too)
