JUBAL'S CATEGORY VOTING IS TOMORROW

 VOTE FOR JUBAL
A smile on every face and

Hey Hounders,
Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 8th will be voting day for MANGO MINSTER 2011 "Good Old Dog" category in which I, Jubal (a.k.a. Jubey, Jubes, Big Jubes) am a contestant.  I would be most 'preciative if'n ya'll could take a minute of your valuable time and pop on over to the Mango Minster 2011 web-page and cast a ballot or two in my favor. On show day Mango will post voting buttons in the sidebar of his blog (as soon as his Momma wakes up) then you will have approximately 32 hours to cast your votes for Reader's Choice in the category (don't worry, there will be a count down timer on his blog).  Alex, my feline bro, nominated me; he also nominated Patti Whackit in the Insane Cracker Dog category. Voting in Patti's category is Friday.  To see our entry post click here.  Unlike our rescue dogs who have looked at life from both sides, I am fortunate to be able to say that I've lived with mom and dad since I was a puppy.  I joined the household as a playmate for one of the 3 dogs already in the house, Rusty.  Rusty was mom and dad's 1st puppy dog and then they got Penny as a companion for Rusty.  That worked out OK for a while but as she got older Penny grew up but Rusty was like Peter Pan and he didn't.  Mom and dad also had their first rescue dog, Bear, nickamed Old Bear Dog or OBD.  So I came into the home as the fourth dog.  Rusty and I got along GReat.  I was his playmate for a long time.  The lady that had my momma dog and her pups called me Barker, like that TV guy Bob Barker.  I was the last of the pups to go and she made me available to mom at a special discount price.  Mom and dad changed my name to Jubal after that Confederate Army General, Jubal Early.  See, at that time we lived in a development located near Chancellorsville VA where Jubal Early had been involved in battles and where Stonewall Jackson had been shot by his own men.  In 2006, after OBD, Rusty and Penny had all gone to The Rainbow Bridge, the rest of us in the household all moved down by Lake Anna  in Bumpass, VA and we eventually started blogging as The Bumpass Hounds.  After receiving some in house complaints we added "and Kitties" to that name.  I am a pedigree Golden Retriever with papers, not that anyone cares.  I am mom's favorite and she's not all that impartial about it.  I kinda get to do what I want around here because I stay out of the way; I'm not an attention getter.  I like to be comfortable and don't hide that fact.  It doesn't take a lot to make me happy; breakfast and dinner, an after breakfast rawhide chew, an occasional cookie and pat on the head, etc.  I get along with everyone here, including the 4 cats. When mom and dad adopted Radar it was my job to take care of him just like Rusty did for me.  Radar was born blind and without a tail and with some other birth defects.  He developed Parvo Virus and had to be quarantined when he first got here.  When his quarantine was up I was the only one that could play with him for a while.  I showed him around and played with him until he was able to meet the rest of the gang and join the pack.  I have a good life here and I'm most appreciative.  I work with AHGRRS to help out other dogs and cats that are less fortunate than us.  I wish every dog and cat had as loving a home as we do here in The Bumpass Hounds and Kitties.  Please vote for me in Mango's Good Old Dog category.  Thank you, thank you, very much.  - Jubal has left the building.

We can change backto #1 again over a few days if ya'll don't give up your effort---- VOTE  We've got 15.18% of the WV vote today, up from yesterday when we had 16.98% ;  #1 has 24.88% and yesterday they had 25.76%.  There's now a 9.70% gap (10.58% yesterday) which we, hopefully, can continue to close in just a week of heavy voting. We're now at #118 nationally; yesterday we were #133.  The WV #1 shelter is at #59 nationally (yesterday #53); now 59 spots ahead of us; it was 78 spots ahead of us yesterday. SUPER SUNDAY; WE'RE WATCHING "THE" GAME

 "THE" GAME

Puppy Bowl VII's lineup ready to ruff it up
From CNN:
Are you ready for the cutest, most adorable faux sporting event of the year?
Animal Planet has announced the lineup for Puppy Bowl VII, the annual Super Bowl antidote pitting irresistible pups against each other and a slew of chew toys on the gridiron.
The football-with-puppies game has aired the same day as its fellow venerated American tradition, the Super Bowl, for the past seven years.
The 20-pup starting lineup was assembled from shelters and rescues across the country and as far as the U.S. Virgin Islands, all of whom will be vying for the title of MVP, or most valuable puppy (surely you knew that).
Among our favorites: a Lab mix named Jack, who has apparently learned to deal cards and pick up some hours at the local casino in the 12 weeks he has been alive, according to his profile; and 16-week old "Little Red," a shih tzu-beagle mix who has a culinary degree.
Check out the complete starting lineup
Ratcheting up the cuteness factor this year is the addition of chicken cheerleaders on the sidelines and "puppy-cam technology" that will enable fans to experience the field from a player's perspective, Animal Planet said.
And, 3-D fans take note: For the first time in Puppy Bowl history, the action will be broadcast in a 3-D version that will premiere on the “3net” network, the brainchild of Discovery Communications, Sony and IMAX.
Forget the Black Eyed Peas - the Bissell Kitty Half-Time Show will be back with a kitty-inspired acoustic solo performance that promises to dazzle canine and feline fans alike.
Fortunately, you won't have to choose: Puppy Bowl begins at 3 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, February 6, on Animal Planet, more than three hours before kickoff of Super Bowl XLV.

Canine chaos reigns at the Puppy Bowl, Animal Planet's adorable response to the other big game this Sunday.
What started seven years ago as a network space-filler is now an annual event watched by more than 8.6 million people. Executive Producer Melinda Toporoff said no one expected such a tremendous public reaction.
"At first, it was kind of like our Yule log -- we just needed to put something on TV during the Super Bowl," she said. "But it has transformed from style over substance to a lot of substance. We're all pleasantly surprised by how well it does."
Aside from boosted ratings, the Puppy Bowl -- a mock football game played by puppies drafted from shelters across the country -- offers help for homeless animals.
"It's really a call to action," Toporoff said. "We want to raise awareness for shelters everywhere and get more puppies adopted."
This year, Puppy Bowl VII features 20 players in the starting lineup. Among them are Oliver, a 9-week-old Great Pyrenees who, according to Animal Planet player stats, is a movie buff, and Brownie Sundae -- a 10-week-old cocker spaniel mix with a knack for spelling bees.
"There's lots of backstage cuddling," said Puppy Ref Andrew Schechter, who describes his referee role as "more of a glorified pooper scooper." "We're lucky that all the puppies are the most adorable puppies possible."
The puppies score touchdowns by dragging a chew toy over the goal line. At the end of the game, the "Most Valuable Puppy" is selected based on athletic performance and minimal napping on the field -- though no one's sure if participants are cognizant of the competition.
"The show is very tongue-in-cheek," Schechter said. "It's cute and fluffy and fun, but the idea is to help the puppies."
More than 250 animals have been adopted through Puppy Bowl since 2004, he said.
By the time the show finishes recording in October (for editing reasons, Puppy Bowl can't be live), most of the "starting" puppies have already found homes. Big Red -- a shepherd mix featured in Sunday's game -- is still waiting for an owner, however.
"Everything's really evolved since the beginning," Schechter said. "It's something we're really proud of."
New this year, chicken cheerleaders will squawk from the sidelines. Pet owners submitted online videos to the "kiss cam," which will showcase intermittent human-pet displays of affection.
Kittens return to jump around in a frenzy of lights and streamers during the halftime show.
Schechter said the show is full of surprises, including an instance of "puppy indecency" in 2009.
"Cover your eyes, folks!" the announcer declared during Puppy Bowl V. "We've got a streaker!"
A clean-shaven Chinese crested puppy -- "censored" by a Girls Gone Wild-style digital black rectangle -- burst onto the miniature football field, weaving between baby Labradors and beagles and Chihuahuas.
"I got her. It's OK," Schechter said, gently lifting the traditionally furless pooch. "Come on, you're out of here."
Toporoff said it's all entertaining.
"There's just the sheer 'Aw!' factor," she said. "That makes it hard to look away."
Watch Puppy Bowl VII on Sunday, February 6, at 3 p.m. on Animal Planet.

SATURDAY MUSINGS

GOOD OL' BOY JUBAL
Hey Hounders,
Jubal here.  We'd like to send a GReat big "THANK YOU" to Mayzie, Mayzie's mom and Max Mom.  Mayzie recently held a commentathon and we all participated.  Mayzie's mom was awarding charitable donations to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.  Well none of the 15 of us won (DRATS!) but Max Mom won 3rd place.  When Mayzie's mom checked with Max Mom about where to send the donation Max Mom told Mayzie's mom to please send it to Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary.  Max Mom has two Golden Retrievers, Tammy and Toby; they live in South Africa.  Toby is a young pup that Max Mom is trainingThanks to Mayzie for hosting the event.  Thanks to Mayzie's mom for donating money and giving some to Max Mom.  And last, but not least, thanks to Max Mom for giving her prize to AHGRRS.

OLD GIRL MABEL
Our new blogging buddy Hawkeye (a.k.a. Browndog) had a special post the other day and we were taken by the kindness of it.  Hawk is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever so he must be A-OK.  After all, he's a Retriever like most of us and he's from Chesapeake Bay.  Our dad works in a building located on the Chesapeake Bay and he works on an airplane also named Hawkeye.
Well anyway, Hawk had a friend of his do some of the special post; that's what made it special.  His friend's name is Mabel and she's a 12 year old Chesapeake Bay Retriever.  She's been put into a bad situation and is asking for help.  If ya'll know of a nice family or caring person in the vicinity of Stamford, CT maybe they could help her out.  It would, unfortunately, be for only a few years but she promises that she won't be any trouble.  Doesn't anyone have room in their heart and room in their home for Mabel? Please check out her situation.

RADAR & HOMER J.
Radar and Homer J. here. Ya'll know that us two as well as Abby, Sophie, and Patti all came to be Bumpass Hounds cuz AHGRRS rescued us.  That's why we care so much about AHGRRS and are concerned that things aren't going too good for them in The Animal Rescue Site's Shelter Challenge.  But remember; "Never give Up, Never Surrender."  We really need your help.  We've discovered that everyone can vote more than once a day, actually at least twice a day if you have about an 8-12 hour span between voting.  Just that hint alone could double our daily vote tally. Another thing would be to try to coerce a few of your friends and/or work buddies to join our effort.  It might help if as many of you as possible were to put a vote button on your blogs, there are a variety to choose from; just click here for the resources page and look
PATTI & SOPHIE
under "Links To Our Website."  It would help a lot if you'd tell people that don't already have a favorite shelter to just enter "WV" in the State Box and "Capon" in the City Box and then click on "Search" to get
ABBY
AHGRRS in the voting box.  Mom and dad don't like us to beg, but they'll make an exception for this, so we're begging; any help will be very much appreciated

MS. CAROL UPDATE FROM AHGRRS

Hey Hounders, Patti-Whackit here.  We got a newsletter update about goings-on up at Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary.  We're posting it below.  I also need ya'll to help me out in my quest to win Mango Minster 2011 in the Insane Cracker Dog category.  Twinkie Tiny is the category judge.  Please stop by Twinkie Tiny's blog where you can see my points summary and leave Twinkie a POSITIVE comment about my qualifications.  Check out my entry post.
- Patti Whackit

MS. CAROL'S NEWSLETTER
 Hi Everyone:
Sorry for the delay in updates.  Skip became ill just before Christmas and has been in and out of the hospital with a terribly infected leg since then.  He is finally off all IV antibiotics and though he does have permanent damage to the blood vessels of his leg - he is doing much better now.
The Shelter Challenge is once again in full swing.  We are currently in 2nd place, but I know if we all pull together, we can once again pull into first.  The prize money would be very welcome here - - - - - as the vet bills have skyrocketed this year.  Please help us win the $1,000 first prize.  (And if you notice, there is also a writing contest - - - - - stories about rescues????)
Here is the link for voting.  Please pass it along to all your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and relatives.
(ed. - WE CAN DOUBLE OUR VOTES: Seems you can vote once about every 10 - 12 hours.  Vote early in the morning before going to work and again before going to bed.  Vote when you get to work and try again just before going home.  It's been working for us.)
Here are a few of our orphans who need sponsors.  Please take a look - any and all help is appreciated.
BRANDY
GLAD
.
Brandy & Glad, 4 - 5  year old littermates who came to us intact and heartworm positive.   They have received their treatment and are on the mend.  These are two of the nicest dogs we have ever had the pleasure to help.  To date, their vet bills have exceeded $1,100.  Any and all help is appreciated.
.
HANNAH
5 year old Hannah had been used for breeding.  We will never know why her owner decided to relinquish her, but we suspect it may have had something to do with the cough she has.  Our vets are still investigating the cause, our bills are already over $750.  This sweet girl needs your help.
.

TWISTABOUT
3 - 4 month old Twist was found wandering alongside a busy roadway.  This sweet puppy loves everything and everybody in spite of his past.  We estimate his vet bills will exceed $300 - just for routine vetting.

SUGAR
5 - 6 year old Sugar lives up to her name.  After being bred for profit, her owner decided she wasn't worth the cost of having her eyes corrected.  Sugar has entropian (eyelids turn in and scratch the eyeball).  We are still getting estimates for everything she needs, but we already know her bill will exceed $750.
.

THEODORE
2 - 3 year old Theodore came to us after having been dumped at a high kill shelter in Virginia.  Theo tested positive for exposure to Ehrlichia - a hideous tick borne disease, and in order to make sure he had just been exposed - and was not actually ill - we had to have a very expensive test performed on him.  Our vet bills for Theo, including his routine vetting has totalled almost $500.  We are happy to report that Theo is not an ehrlichia victim, he is a normal, healthy, sweetheart of a dog.
.

RALPHIE
We are happy to report that 10 year old Ralphie is doing well.  He came to us after his owners dumped him at a shelter, declaring that "they just didn't want him any more".  Ralphie's eyes were almost glued shut with pus and matter, his skin was full of sores, and his entire demeanor was one of a dog who was ready to give up.  Ralphie is now ready for adoption - - - and whoever takes this boy home will be one very lucky person.  Ralphie is a personal favorite here - - - - - - he is truly special.
.
(ed. Here's a bit of GReat news in the letter to offset the terrible news from earlier in the week.)

Poor Boy and Cooper have both been adopted and are living happily ever after in their forever homes.  That could not have happened without all the help we had from our sponsors and supporters.

COOPER
POOR BOY / PETEY

We "may" have found at least some temporary help here at the Sanctuary.  The added expense of even a part time salary will put a strain on the rescue's budget - but with the numbers of dogs who need us, and Skip's health issues - it is necessary.  We are still trying to work out the details - and we have no idea how long this arrangement will work.  (The man is now laid off from a much higher paying job - and may be called back to work.)
Thank you for allowing us to continue our work.  We are looking forward to spring -
Carol

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
