TBH+K SOLICITING BRAVO-ZULU NOMINATIONS

"BZ"

Rescued Shiloh
Hey Hounders,
It's the TBH+K "rescues" here with an important post about our BZ award.  As rescued Golden Retrievers ourselves, we realize how important that people and dogs dedicate some of their efforts to helping dogs (and cats) that would are homeless and/or in a shelter.
Rescued Sophie
We are all looking for the same thing people want, to be a loved family member in a forever home. We have met many wonderful cats and dogs through Dogs With Blogs and independent blogs. We were introduced to DWB by our friend Spencer who is at The Rainbow Bridge.

Rescued Jenny
He helped rescue Golden Retrievers in Southern California and his family's current Golden, Kona, is continuing that effort. We do what we can here in Virginia and our blog buddies Mogley and Bella are helping out in the Rocky Mountain states.  Our friend The Luke helped in the effort around Houston before he went to The Bridge and his br The Bleu continues the work now. Finding a new home for a homeless dog is difficult enough, but the older the dog the more difficult it seems to be.

Our dad is an old salt; that means he was in the Navy (like the Village People's song). In the Navy, when someone did something good that was out of the ordinary, something above and beyond the norm, they would often be recognized with a "BZ" message or flag hoist or letter of commendation. In the nautical phonetic alphabet, the letter "B" is pronounced "BRAVO" and the letter "Z" is pronounced "ZULU."

Rescued Jack

Rescued Radar and Rescued Homer J.

Hence the "BZ" message is commonly referred to as a "BRAVO-ZULU" and it means "WELL DONE." There is a signal flag for each letter in the alphabet; the BRAVO flag is solid red with a triangular bite missing from the fly side; the ZULU flag is square with the base of four different colored triangles on each side (yellow, blue, red and black). On behalf of all the dogs that have found homes because of such efforts, we, The Bumpass Hounds + Kitties of Bumpass, Virginia, created the highly coveted, Bumpass Hounds + Kitties  BRAVO-ZULU Award. This award is not one to be passed on or transferred. It is solely for the recipient to whom it is awarded. There are no rules or requirements that go with it.  It's nothing fancy and no money comes with it, but the recipients have already received their reward, and it is NOT a stuffy that squeals. Since March of 2009 we have only given out 5 BZ Awards.

THE FIVE BRAVO-ZULU AWARD WINNERS TO DATE ARE:

Well, we'd like all of you hounders to pick your brains and see if there's any blog that you think would qualify to receive the BZ Award.  Remember, it is awarded to a blog that has gone above and beyond the norm to make a difference in the effort to rescue homeless animals and assist in finding them happy and loving furever homes.  We'd like ya'll to submit nominations for consideration to us via email at bumpasshounds@hughes.net

VOTING STATUS:

Seemed to lose a bit of ground today in the West Virginia state competition, as of 3/04/2011, AHGRRS can say "WE'RE STILL #1." We can stay at #1 if ya'll don't give up your effort---- VOTE. We've got 16.95% of the WV vote today, UP from 3/3 when we had 16.93% ; #2 has 16.38%, UP 3/3 when they had 16.25%. There's now only a 0.57% gap (0.68% yesterday) which, hopefully, we can open further with continued heavy voting. We're now at #128 nationally; same place from 3/3 when we were #128. The WV #2 shelter is at #132 nationally, UP two spots (3/3 they were at #134); so they're only 4 spots behind us; it was 6 spots behind us on 3/2. We are truly appreciative of your voting efforts on our behalf,  Voting ends at midnight Pacific Standard Time on Sunday night March 20th -.Hallelujah!
LET'S KEEP UP THE SURGE.

YOU CAN HELP US OUT

Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) operates solely on private donations and corporate or organizational grants. Right now you can help us in our attempt to win a $1,000.00 grant from The Animal Rescue Site's Shelter Challenge. The below logo link will take you to the Animal Rescue Site (dad fixed it) where you will get to click to donate a free bowl of food to homeless animals. After you do that you will be presented with a "Thank You" page; at the right side of the top of that page please click on the "VOTE TODAY" button. That will then take you directly to the voting page. The only information that you need to enter is to select "WV" in the State box from the drop down menu and then click on "Search." The page will then do its' thing and will end up showing a list of shelters. The second shelter on the list will be "Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc. Capon Bridge, WV 26714." A "VOTE" button will also appear. Simply click on that "VOTE" button. After you vote you will see a confirmation page that requires you to identify an animal photo; this eliminates illegal machine voting. The answer is simply the type of animal that you see; dog, cat, turtle, fish, cow, etc. - not a specific breed. You can cast one vote everyday from as many different computers to which you have access. Actually, you can vote in the early morning and then again in the evening after about 8-10 hours; you can also vote from different browser such as MS-Explorer, Yahoo, Firefox and Google Chrome. Voting will run for about six more weeks. You can have the Animal Rescue Site send you a daily reminder to "click" for free food; then you can vote in the All-Star Shelter Challenge. The more friends you can rally to vote the better our chances of winning. Every vote, every day, every computer - counts. On our blog we provide a status report of how we're doing; right now not so hot - 2nd place and slipping. Won't you please take the time to help out a senior Golden?

YOU DON"T KNOW JACK!

BUT YOU COULD, KNOW JACK THAT IS.
HANDSOME HOMER
Hey Hounders,
Homer J. here.  As the official spokes dog for TBH+K I'd like to tell you that our blog buddy Jack, out in Tucson, AZ, is now a published author, along with his faithful friend and companion, Tonto - errr I mean Tall Guy; hereafter referred to as TG.  So, if you bounce over to their blog, "Daily Dose of Jack" you can find out how to learn more about a dog that was such a cute puppy (stuff happens) and who is NOT, regrettably, a chocolate Labrador Retriever like some people (TG?) wanted him to be.
HOMER - (NOT JACK)
We have only read the "teaser" allow by TG and 2/3 of that was about stuff that ya'll can't do like stealing TG's identity and stuff (written in Bengaleeze, err that's Legaleeze).  But our Daily Dose of Jack is usually very informative, at least about Jack, and occasionally entertaining.  So if you can, why not check out Jack's new book, creatively titled (now hold on to your hats or whatever) "Jack."  Oh yeah, right now, in my humble but sage opinion, it is really NOT a book at all (YET) because it isn't something that you can get up on the couch with and really take a bite out of it and chew on it and shred it and really make a big mess that upsets mom when she sees it and dad when he has to clean it up after mom tells him to.   It's currently more like an "e-book," which ya'll can't really run around the house with and having mom yell at ya and what not. If you're chewing on a kindle you're gonna have bigger problem real quick.

We can stay at #1 if ya'll don't give up your effort---- VOTE.  Strange numbers here, one of the lagging shelters must be gaining significantly.  We've got 16.88% of the WV vote today, DOWN from 3/1 when we had 18.53% ; #2 has 16.15%, DOWN from 3/1 when they had 25.31%. There's now a 0.73% gap (8.62% the other way on 3/1) which, hopefully, we can open further with continued heavy voting. We're now at #135 nationally; DOWN significantly from 3/1 when we were #102. KIBBLE AND TREATS CUTBACK

NO TREATS FOR US MOM, WE'RE CUTTING BACK.
Hey Hounders,

TOO COMFORTABLE!

None of us Bumpass Hounds and Kitties are living high on the hog, sort of speak.  Sure, we're comfortable; some more comfortable than others, but we're not living the life of luxury. But we want to help the country.  Dad
is a 20 year Navy veteran and leans a little right when he walks, a patriotic sort of guy too.  So we've had to adjust to his lifestyle.  We all want to do are part to help the economic situation.  Some things, like the mortgage and car payments are like government entitlements, off limits.  Hence, we've had to make some tough choices!  By making sacrificial and proportional cuts in your own personal budget, you can appreciate that budget cutting really cuts to the quick.
WE'RE HUNGRY.
Please accept our apology in advance for the following proposal about an unpleasant subject. We've tried very hard not to do it, but because it helped our perspective and made us feel much better; we thought perhaps it would do as much for you. It's tough, but we all need to do our part.
The President ordered the cabinet to cut a whopping $100 million from the $3.5 trillion federal budget. We're so impressed by this sacrifice that we have decided to do the same thing with our household budget. We spend about $4,000 a month on groceries, medicine, bills, etc. etc.,  and now it's time to get out our budget cutting axe, go line by line through our expenses, and get to work.

GOODBYE CLUCK.
We're going to cut our spending at exactly the same ratio as the President; 1/35,000 of our total budget. After doing the math, it looks like instead of spending $4,000 a month; we're going to have to cut that number downward by eleven cents!
Yes, we know that’s a lot and we must somehow get by with $3,999.89, but that is what sacrifice is all about. The President has requested us to get some of our own “skin in the game” with everyone else. So we'll just have to do without some things, that are, quite frankly, luxuries those eleven cents normally buy us.
Guess we'll have to put a little less water on our kibble or give up that 3rd dog biscuit after breakfast, no more chicken! Tough decisions all.
Hope this helps brighten your day ... and gives you a little better understanding of just how serious our President is in regard to spending cutbacks. Heck, things are bound to get better in no time with such draconian measure being set into place.
Feel better now?
- THE BUMPASS HOUNDS AND KITTIES

STEP UP TO ADOPT A PET

If you can, please consider opening your home to a homeless animal, preferably a dog or cat or other domesticated animal; livestock does better on farms and wild animals do better in zoos and parks. Your local Humane Society or SPCA or Animal Shelter has a wide selection of could be, should be, pets looking for new homes. If you can't adopt, perhaps you can at least become a sponsor. We'll show you how to help out Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue and Sanctuary (AHGRRS) on our blog page, but you can help out any organization of your choice, but please help; contribute or volunteer.

PLEASE HELP SPONSOR A SENIOR OR SPECIAL NEEDS GOLDEN

CAN'T ADOPT; BECOME AN ANGEL.
So many Senior and Special Needs Goldens do not find "forever homes". Many of these dogs have above average medical needs and costs, are maintained on "special" diets, or have other extraordinary needs. Your donations can be targeted towards a particular Senior or Special needs Golden Retriever. As a sponsor, you will receive updates about your "special" Golden, and will be mentioned in our quarterly newsletter as the dog's sponsor. We also accept Paypal donations. Please keep in mind that we are a non-profit organization and that your donation is fully tax-deductible. Please just write the Golden's name in the memo line of your check or Paypal submission when sponsoring a Golden Retriever.
