START YOUR ENGINES
Alex and Boru here. Today is race day. Not just any race; THE RACE. That's not the Monte Carlo Grand Prix, that's not the Indianapolis 500, that's not the Kentucky Derby; that is THE DAYTONA 500. Today marks the start of the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. NASCAR has it's origins in the southern United States. It developed from "moonshine runners." Those were drivers with souped up cars that hauled illegal homemade whiskey ("moonshine") from illegal mountain stills to distribution points (bars) in populated areas. The liquor was illegal and since taxes weren't generated the governments took action to shutdown the stills and arrest the transporters. This resulted in spectacular mountain road (Thunder Road) races between "moonshine runners" and police cars. The moonshine runners' cars had highly modified engines and stuff that more often than not could outrun the police cars. Anyways, these drivers eventually started legitimate racing events that eventually became what is now NASCAR racing. The "SC" in NASCAR stands for "Stock Car" which implies that these are cars driven of the lot of a local car dealership; HA HA HA HA HA. No way, Jose. These cars will be traveling around the speedway at close to 200 miles per hour, lets see your everyday Ford Focus do that.
Well anyway, we'll be watching THE RACE this afternoon since we're both rednecks, granted, Boru is redder than Alex. We all have our own favorite drivers that we root for. Mom is a Ryan Newman fan, Ryan's a veteran driver who won this race in 2008. Dad is a Jeff Gordon fan; Jeff has already won this race 3 times. We are Danica Patrick fans: Danica's a girl and this is her first Daytona 500 race; she's a rookie, a newbie, etc.. Who's your favorite?
